Aging Populations and Chronic Disease Burdens By: Georgia Sherry A current trend in aging is becoming one of the biggest issues in healthcare right now: people are living longer and birth rates are dropping. Around the world, there has been a rise in life expectancy and a decline in fertility rates, which has lead to a shift in the balance of age groups. This change is increasing the demand for care and amplifying the burden of chronic disease management. Multiple sources show that most adults over 65 are managing at least one chronic disease. This alone would be a challenge, but when you combine it with the rising healthcare costs and healthcare systems that were not built for long term, complex care, it becomes a major issue.
